Hurricanes Sweep Metro
Fighting Moose
The Metro
Fighting Moose Jr B Team traveled down to sunny Florida to
take on the Space Coast Hurricanes this past weekend. The
Hurricanes swept the moose with a 6 – 1 and a 7 – 3 victory.
In the first contest, the
Hurricanes struck first with a shorthanded goal from
defensemen Sam Trask midway through the second
period. Trask picked up a drop pass from John
McGinnis who forced a turn-over inside the Moose’s zone.
Trask fired a snap shot that caught the Moose goalie
James Coppola by surprise. The Fighting Moose fought back
and tied the game thirty seconds later just as the
Hurricanes penalty expired.
The score remained that way until Andreas
Johansson picked up a rebound and sniped top shelf on a
falling Moose goalie. Matt Danna would give the
“Canes” a bigger cushion when he received a nice pass from
Ryan Whelan for a power play goal to make it 3 – 1.
The line of John McGinnis, Kent Ramsey and
Jeb Goddard were being matched up against the Moose’s
top defensemen all game, but that was not going to stop
them, as McGinnis scored after getting a great pass
from Tyler Vokes who walked a Moose defender and
found McGinnis opened on the back door. Kent Ramsey
would strike a few shifts later after receiving a pass from
Jeb Goddard who fought his way into the zone after
beating the Moose defensemen. The last goal of the game
came off the stick of Sam Trask on a five on three
power play; Sam took the pass from Chase Stokes
and found a small opening on the short side of the Moose’s
goalie for the goal.
“The goaltending and defense have been playing
extremely well over the last several weeks and that is
helping the offense get more scoring chances. All the boy’s
are developing very nicely and its great to watch them
play,” say’s Head Coach Shawn Ray
In game two on Sunday, the Hurricanes struck
right away when Kyle Houser took advantage of a Moose
line change as he raced down the right boards. Just inside
the top of the circle, he snapped a shot the found its way
pass Allen Khiger of the Fighting Moose. About five minutes
later, Sam Trask scored from the right point after
getting a pass from Luke Mollison and Chris Greer.
The Fighting Moose fought back and tied the game up at two,
but Hurricanes forward Ryan Whelan crashed the net
and buried a loose puck to take back the lead. The first
period would finish with the “Canes” ahead 3 – 2.
The second period belonged to the Hurricanes as
Andreas Johansson netted two goals and John
Jennings added one to finish the second period with the
“Canes” leading 6 – 2. In the third, both teams exchanged
goals and it was Tyler Vokes who finished off the
scoring for the Hurricanes with the assists going to
Mollison and Johansson. “We were very determined
to get these two wins, especially when it was the last time
our fans would see us this year. The boy’s played their
hearts out and they are really making a name for themselves
down here in Florida,” adds Shawn Ray
Next up, the Hurricanes travel up to Charlotte,
NC to play a four game showcase against the Jersey Wildcats,
NY Apple Core, Binghamton Senators and the Brewster
Bulldogs. The East Coast Eagles will be taking the place of
the Bulldogs, due to the Bulldogs seizing operations early
in the season.
