Jr. Hurricanes Summer Team
Wins Hub Cup
The Space Coast Jr.
Hurricanes Summer Team (Jets AAA) competed at the
4th annual Hub Cup Midget Tournament in
Bridgewater, MA. The Midget Major Team lost in the finals to
Brandywine Selects and the Midget Minor Team beat Express
USA to win the Hub Cup.
Both teams went 3-0 in the
round robin games with the Major team finishing in 2nd
and the Minor team finishing in 6th place. “I
was very impressed with both teams and the way that they
competed. Especially the Minor Team after they came from
behind to win two games.” Said Assistant Coach Kevin
Schaeffer (BU)
The Minor Team had come
from behind twice to make it to the semi-finals. Down 3-0
against a very strong South Shore Dynamos team, the Jets
Minor team rallied to tie the game with less then 7 seconds
on the clock and an empty net. After the 5 minute overtime
the game went in to a shootout. Richie Prunesti
(Avalanche) dangled the goalie with a backhand toe drag and
shot the puck top corner. Seconds later Jarred Lenner
(Ft. Lauderdale) stopped the Dynamos final player to win the
shootout and send the Jets to the semi-finals.
The Jets faced off against
the NHCD team from the Midwest and again, Lenner was
there to help secure the Jets with a 2-1 win. An hour
later, the Minor Team faced off against the Express USA and
dominated most of the game and won the Hub Cup Tournament
with a 2-0 victory. This is the second Hub Cup Victory for
the Jets AAA. Last year, the 94 Jets won the first ever Hub
Cup Bantam Minor Tournament.
The Majors team dominated
all 3 opponents in the preliminary round, beating the CT.
Selects 8-1, then downing the Jr. Bruins 5-1 and finally
eliminating the New Roc Patriots from the tournament with a
4-2 victory. The top line of KJ Tefienworth, (East
Meadow, NY) John McGinnis (Melbourne, FL) and
Kevin Goumas (West Palm, FL) lead the team with 25
points amongst them in the first three games. The defensive
units were very solid shutting down the offensive
opportunities and Joey Cimaglia (West Palm, FL) was
again superb in net only allowing 4 goals in three games.
Next up for the Jr.
Hurricanes summer team (Jets) is the Jr.
Chowder Cup Tournament in Walpole, MA. Last year they
made it to the final four out of 80 teams and they look to
do the same this year.
